PROSE

Works that focus more on direct description and contains less of a rhythmic structure than found in poetry.

Zugzwang [TO BE RENAMED]

A novella/long short story emphasizing the physical.

A work-in-progress, started on February 12, 2022.

Rewrite began on February 21, 2023.

Prologue sample below. Subject to change.

NOTE: FULL MANUSCRIPT will be published when full draft is written.

I will not publish part by part.

For context, I plan there to be 4 parts along with a Prologue and Epilogue.

Part I, II, and III have been scrapped, resetting progress almost completely. The prologue as seen here will stay, however.

My writing style is ever-so-slightly different than the Nasu-inspired prose I looked up before (make no mistake, I still look up to his writing style today but not so codependently now.) so I plan to rewrite my story in that style instead.

Chronicles of 53s

My submissions for the monthly 53-Word Contest, hosted by Press 53.

Listing of thematic works that are exactly 53 words long. Will be continually updated. First entry on 3/14/22.

My individual commentary for each of my submissions will be placed in a subsection below each of my works, given this part of my portfolio will be subject to continual updates on a monthly basis.

Hansha

A novella emphasizing the psychological.
My first attempt at writing a psychologically-themed story.

Started progress on June 11, 2022. Final version released on August 1, 2022.

"But it’s been 2 months…

All of our friends are waiting out there somewhere for us, you know."

'Create a short story indicating a shift in the health continuum.'

That was the assignment instruction that prompted me to make this work.

But soon enough, such a story spiraled out of control. A story that was meant to last for 20-ish pages, it had almost quadrupled that goal to a point where it no longer was an assignment but a passion project.

Initially, the story idea was developed months before ever attempting this project, where I discussed the idea with a collaborative friend where it was put on a table for emotional story ideas.

Ultimately, this idea was left to collect dust after we chose a certain topic to touch on. But I guess I had the chance to reuse such a concept for this assignment (albeit it was remixed slightly to fit the logic of this assignment...)

SPOILER ALERT (Use the mouse to left-click and drag over the text in highlight if you read the story already.)

The original idea was to have a childhood friend ghost that pushed a shut-in protagonist to move on from the event that cause the friend's death. But over time, the more the protagonist moved on, the childhood friend ghost would gradually disappear until one day, the protagonist returned home to see her completely just gone. However, I felt that idea would take a long time to execute it the way I would like it to, despite its potential emotional impact. So when I approached this project, I already had the protagonist on the verge of moving on but still wanting to stay in the past. And from there, the idea shifted from being a ghost to one being a hallucinatory manifestation of the childhood friend the protagonist lost where it was a balance of accepting reality and living in the comfort of delusions.

Along with that, I drew a great deal of inspiration from psychological stories such as OMORI with themes of moving on, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon A Time with a structure of a psych-stricken protagonist and their subsequent liberation from their torment, and Fate/stay night for its writing style at times, especially the uses of the em-dash.

To be fair, this was the most I've ever suffered from a period of stagnation while writing, perhaps writer's block. There was a point where I got peer review for my first draft and while it was somewhat good, trying to rework the project to a point where I could hopefully satisfy most of the review's suggestion proved demotivating as I realized my project was much more disorganized and lackluster in certain areas than I thought. I ended up having about half a month/almost a whole month where I made little to no progress until I realized the summer was about to end.

From there, I noted that instead of writing on a computer, I found that writing on a notebook proved much more stimulating in the present since I can actively write ideas on the sidelines of drafts along with active revisions here and there, to show that in my mistakes, there was progress after all the cross-outs and erasures. And to me, that proved to be the defining mark to finally go forward in my project.

So after 75 pages of work and about 19.1k words, I can hopefully and proudly present to you my first novella:

                                                          Hansha. Or in English, Reflection.

*I may put up more revised versions as time progresses where I may edit parts here and there.

Wish.com

A cautionary yet comedic tale about the balance of pricing and quality.

Written between June 22, 2022 and June 24, 2022

- “Where did you get this from?”

- “...Uh...this site is called Wish.”

- “...”

~2,900 words.

This short story was actually originally for a Health class I'm taking over the 2022 Summer! For this story, I decided to make somewhat of an experimental approach and take a more uplifting and less serious work than the ones I've been developing recently. I also tried to cater the dialogue and practice constructing a sort of pseudo-"kuudere" character, which could prove useful later on...!

Post-crescendo

A sneak-peek into the world of A Midnight Songstress.

Progress has started as of September 13, 2022.

Prologue has been written as of October 13, 2022.

It was a night that refused to leave my mind.

Prologue is the only part that has been written and could be subject to change. (~5800 words)

Chapter I or whatever the next part is named will be posted here when it has been written as well. A more detailed synopsis will be provided when the next part is written since writing a synopsis when the 1st part other than the prologue hasn't been written seems a bit off.

Orange and Yellow

A short story with the theme "autumn".

Written on September 22, 2022.

"...this would be the last view of place I have always called my second home."

I tend to find myself attached to stories of the environment. And given the season of autumn had just arrived at the time I wrote this, I thought "why not?" and I wrote something about someone who was seemingly in tune with the nature around them - a constant in our everyday lives.

I always tend to think that nature is a place of reflection - a stopping point in time where we rest and think "how have our lives come up to this point?" It's always a sense of transcendence that never fails to make me feel at peace or relaxed as I seem to temporarily escape into reality and into the world of the trees, the wind, and the sky.

Because of that reflective state, I then chose to have the protagonist to be rather old since granted, a person who is older has much more to reflect on than a person who is younger. I originally thought of a scene where the old man reflected on a memory where he was playing in a river valley in the forest by a wooden windmill still spinning in the night before looking up to see the stars. But I felt that would add too much "concrete" details as if trying to imply a much larger story to the protagonist. However, I tried to keep the memories vague, focusing less on background story and more on the emotions attached to a memory, to help the reader to relate to the protagonist as much as possible.

And that ending - I mainly wrote it that way since I felt that at an old age, we may hold a lot of regrets and thoughts about the lives we have led. However if we don't pay much mind attention to the disasters of human conflicts, crime, tension, and fighting, I feel that there's no denying that in between the darkness, there are parts of the world that are truly beautiful which we can at least appreciate - whether it's nature, our friends, our family, our relationships, and our memories of them as we go through the seasons (this one being with a tinge of orange and yellow).
